D.E.M.F. weekend

While I'm here, I might as well mention that since I learned how to drive and bought a car (!!!!!), I actually go to shows in Detroit pretty often now, so I finally got to go to the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (officially called Movement but everyone still calls it DEMF) this year. It's in a park area called Hart Plaza that's right downtown, and the Made in Detroit stage is right next to the street, so as soon as you drive into downtown there's booming techno everywhere, which is kind of astounding, kind of "only in Detroit". There's 5 stages and they're mostly spread out, except the main amphitheatre stage is adjacent to Made in Detroit but facing the opposite direction. There's a huge fountain in the middle and a bunch of overpriced food trucks parked around in a circle. There's also a lower level where I guess there's sometimes art exhibits, but there's an underground stage and a room with a bunch of product demos from Moog and Vestax and some other synths and turntable/DJ equipment companies. So it was pretty cool, there was always 5 things happening at once and it's all within a few minutes walking distance, so I didn't have to miss anything, not like SXSW where there's a million things spread out among an entire city and I have to make decisions. And to be honest, most of the acts playing tend to be 1 guy just playing techno/house for an hour or 2, mostly pretty much the same style, and even if I really enjoy it I kind of get tired of it after a half hour or so, so it's nice to have that variety, and the ability to switch to something else so easily.

So anyway, quick rundown of highlights... I got to a late start Saturday because I drove all the way there and parked and noticed I left my ticket at home, so I drove home and got a speeding ticket on the way home, so I got back to Detroit later in the afternoon. Hudson Mohawke and Daedelus mixed things up stylistically, altho I'm not sure if Daedelus was using his monome like the first time I saw him. I caught a bit of Dam-Funk's set, I saw him last year at SXSW and he played a keytar and sang through a vocoder, which was awesome, but I didn't see him with those this time, but I didn't see the entire set either. In the underground stage, Kero did a really nice set of funky IDM-y stuff. Richard Devine played after and started playing something vaguely resembling dubstep which people were into for a few minutes, but then when it just turned to arrhythmic glitch-noise people couldn't run away fast enough! I actually saw Goldie for a few minutes, when he started he was playing really awesome '90s Metalheadz type stuff, but then I had to leave because Venetian Snares was playing the exact same time and I wasn't going to miss that. When I got back, Goldie was playing Nirvana (!?!) and then some pretty boring sounding generic d'n'b. The MC didn't help either. I saw a bit of Felix Da Housecat's set on the main stage (altho I was way too far away to discern his face) and I was pretty surprised, it wasn't electroclash nor Chicago house, it was closer to distorted French house, and it sounded pretty great.

Sunday I caught a really great live set by Space Dimension Controller, who's apparently 19 and from Ireland and looks like Carson Daly, but he plays really great melodic Detroit-y house/techno. The underground stage had a lot more minimal/dubby/experimental type techno producers. Deepchord Presents Echospace transformed the room into some sort of dub-techno aquarium, Traversable Wormhole did some industrial-ish NYC techno, and I was really into Marcel Dettmann's set, which was just banging. Tons of energy, it was pretty overwhelming. Markus Guentner's set was more minimal and ambient than I was expecting, even though I love Kompakt ambient stuff. Ricardo Villalobos and Carl Craig played sets on the main stage, and they were fine, but I wasn't blown away as much as I thought I would be. It was just kind of them doing their thing. Gaslamp Killer did a pretty crazy set, he wasn't really mixing anything per se, it was more like a cut-n-paste collage, he'd play a minute or two of one track and then move on to something of another genre entirely, everything from Nina Simone to The Stooges to Busta Rhymes to Joker, and also "We Almost Lost Detroit" by Gil Scott-Heron, in dedication to the recently departed legend. I caught a little bit of Aux 88's set too, they had more of a band set-up (live synths and synth-drums), and a Japanese singer, their new album is called Black Tokyo so it was all about the whole Detroit-Tokyo connection/influence.

Memorial Day I didn't stay for too long, I had to leave early because the music meeting at the radio station is on Mondays at 6:30 and I NEVER miss that because I'm a music junkie (who writes music reviews). But I saw a few things. I saw Ramadanman (aka Pearson Sound) who I've been a huge fan of lately, especially for recent juke-inspired tracks like "Work Them". His set was pretty different than I expected, it started out minimal dubby techno, but once he got into more housey stuff, and heavier bass (Bmore club, etc), people were really into it a breakdancing and stuff. I saw a bunch of Terrence Parker's set on the main stage, and it was cool because he was doing lots of turntable tricks, he'd play house records but scratch them up like a hip-hop DJ, one time he played a house track and a Marvin Gaye a capella, and he'd just scratch the a capella up on beat and the crowd went crazy. And he wasn't afraid to thrown on some Michael Jackson when the mood was right, either. After him was a set by the Dirtbombs, one of the biggest current bands in Detroit's garage rock scene, whose singer Mick Collins was in the Gories, probably one of the best Detroit bands ever. They were playing DEMF because their new album is all Detroit techno covers. I think it's a really great thing, obviously these guys know and respect the history of Detroit music and realize how important techno is to the city itself, which is something that I think more people should recognize. What was really amazing about their set was that it wasn't structured like a rock concert, where they play a song all the way through, stop and let people clap so they can tune their instruments, and then start the next one. Instead they played 40 minutes nonstop, structured like a DJ set, where they'd play some of one song and then segue into the next on-beat. I guess in pop music terms this would be called a "medley", to be fair. They had 2 drummers, 2 guitarists and a bass player. Of course since there were no synths or other stuff like that, the songs kind of all sounded similar no matter what they were playing, so unless you knew the songs, it probably just sounded like a rock band trying to play disco. A few people were in on it, though, especially when they played songs like "Good Life" and "Sharevari", and whatever song just repeats "tear the club up, tear the fucking club up." Of course a lot of the audience probably wasn't born when a lot of those songs came out so they wouldn't get it anyway even if it was a DJ playing the actual songs. Anyway, great stuff.

So yeah, definitely a great event, and I definitely feel great being around so many people that, you know, get electronic and dance music culture. I still feel like I'm surrounded by tons of people who don't understand any of this and think I'm weird because I like electronic and experimental music or whatever, so it's cool to be at something like this where there's a general understanding and all that. And I just generally think it's the type of event that gives Detroit a good name, you get all these people here enjoying themselves (and a lot of freaks an weirdos, which is cool too, they have their place) and it's generally keeping spirits up. That's just generally how I feel about Detroit, it's a really great place if you're in the right place at the right time, with the right people, doing the right thing. If you're just wandering around by yourself, it can be hard to even find something that's open, or anything to do, and it could be dangerous if you don't know where to go. Like I left the plaza for a few minutes to try to find something to eat downtown and there wasn't a whole lot within walking distance, other than Subway or Jimmy John's, and like one Coney (which is what they call diners out here even though they don't call them that anywhere in NYC), but there was a really great Thai restaurant so i ate there.

Anyway, yeah, hooray for Detroit. In 2 weekends I'm heading up to Toronto with some friends from the radio station because we have free passes to NXNE. The only band I'm really planning on seeing is DEVO (they actually played Ann Arbor last year but tix were 50-100 bucks so I didn't go), but other than that I'm just excited to wander around Toronto for a weekend.

it's been over a decade since the last Shizuo release, and he only put out 2 albums (one as Give Up) and a handful of singles, i'm sure all of which were probably recorded in the span of a few years... but what this guy was doing in the mid-to-late '90s was so far ahead of its time that i really think nobody has caught up. i was always hoping he'd return to making some sort of crazy fucked up breakbeat noise music, but all reports pointed to him just playing guitar in a punk or rockabilly band. anyway, pretty sad news, i wish i could've seen him when he toured america back during the Grand Royal days, but i was 13 or 14 and living in suburban CT and had no friends so there was no way it could've happened. but everyone i know who was there said their lives were changed and that's how they got into weird underground music and all that, and that he was super drunk and kept talking about how nobody understood what he was doing.

it's been a long long time since i posted here, but this past weekend i went to Chicago and saw Green Velvet. he was playing a free show in this huge bandshell pavilion in the park in downtown Chicago. they have TONS of free shows pretty much every day during the summer. anyway, Green Velvet's set was mostly just him mixing housey tracks, some electro and other stuff. it was closer to his Cajmere stuff actually, which is more housey. some of the Green Velvet stuff is more new-wavey or electroclash. a lot of his Green Velvet tracks, he sings about the darker side of club culture, people doing too many drugs and losing their minds and stuff. this was the only track like that that he did:

you've probably heard this track in some form or another, it's been remixed/bastardized a thousand times, but he did the original.

it was just funny because it was a free house music show in the park at noon, it wasn't too crowded but everyone who was into it was dancing in the aisles or up front, and the rest were just old people sitting in the seats not getting it. and right after this show was an orchestral 4th of july concert, which i guess was what all the old people were waiting for. we stayed for that, i think my mom enjoyed it a lot more anyway.

anyway, yeah, Chicago. i ate tons and tons of awesome food that i didn't have to pay for. didn't get to many record stores, i was kind of trying not to buy records so i didn't look for any stores, but i just wandered around hoping to stumble in one anyway. but i will probably go back at some point, maybe when i get a car.

me and my parents were in town to visit my brother, who is in the navy and graduated from boot camp. he's off to South Carolina, he won't be totally cut off from civilization, i think he gets a tiny bit of money so he can afford to rent a room or something, and he'll be doing navy stuff for 2 years and then going underwater in a nuclear sub somewhere.

also, i finally started a website/blog of my own, it's at http://theanswerisinthebeat.net. i post all my radio show playlists and archives for my new show at WCBN, and i will post some older archival stuff here too. everything's streamable/downloadable, and there is WAY more to come. Geocities died a while back, so my old site is dead, but i don't really care, haha.
